Fairness and Justice

Fairness and Justice within our books

Titles from left: Maniac McGee by Jerry Spinelli, Wonder by R.J. Palacio, Rules by Cynthia Lord, and The Liberation of Gabriel King by K.L. Going
Students will engage in the study of fairness and justice.  They will use one of the following novels to examine this theme through the characters, plot, and author's message.  As a class, we will then compare how we see these ideas within each of the novels.  It is my hope that in studying fairness and justice through literature, students will begin to notice this theme in their own lives.  We have defined fairness and justice in three ways:
1. People should have similar chances to have a happy life.
2. Members of strong groups should care about and work for the interests of more vulnerable groups.
3. Other people's pain should always be significant, even if the other people are from a different race, gender, class, nationality, or set of beliefs.
